There is something so pretty about a blouse that looks special but is still wonderfully simple to sew. This Gathered Puff Sleeve Blouse has a soft off-shoulder neckline, short puff sleeves, a loose gathered body, and an elasticated bottom that gives the entire blouse its lovely billowy shape.
This is the kind of blouse I love because changing the fabric can completely transform it. Make it in soft pink for something romantic and feminine, gingham for a cottage-inspired look, tiny florals for something sweet and vintage, or a beautiful textured fabric for a blouse that feels a little more unusual.

Fabric Texture Suggestions
The gathered design works especially well with lightweight and medium-light fabrics that have enough softness to create the fullness around the neckline, sleeves, and bottom.
A slightly crinkled or textured fabric is particularly pretty for this blouse. The texture adds interest without needing any extra embellishment and makes all of those soft gathers stand out beautifully.
Some fabrics you could experiment with include:
- Crinkle cotton
- Cotton gauze
- Double gauze
- Lightweight linen or linen blends
- Cotton lawn
- Cotton voile
- Lightweight seersucker
- Soft embroidered cotton
- Eyelet fabric
- Swiss dot
- Lightweight chambray
- Soft rayon or viscose
For a more romantic version, you could even experiment with delicate embroidered fabrics or fabrics with subtle woven details.
The most important thing is to choose something that will gather nicely. Very stiff or heavy fabric may make the blouse look more structured and bulky instead of giving you the soft, puffy silhouette of the original.
Fabric Pattern/Colour Suggestions
This blouse is a wonderful little canvas for pretty colours and prints.
Of course, pink is beautiful for this design. Blush pink, dusty rose, ballet pink, strawberry pink, and brighter candy pink would all create slightly different versions of the blouse.
You don’t have to stop at pink, though. I think this pattern would be gorgeous in:
- Powder blue
- Cornflower blue
- Mint green
- Sage green
- Lavender
- Lilac
- Butter yellow
- Cream
- Soft peach
- White
Prints can make the pattern even more fun.
Try gingham for a cheerful cottage look or tiny rosebuds and scattered florals for something more romantic. Polka dots would give the blouse a playful vintage feeling, while stripes could make it feel a little more casual.
Tiny bows, daisies, strawberries, cherries, wildflowers, miniature hearts, and other small-scale prints would also work beautifully.
You could even make several versions of the same blouse in completely different fabrics. A pink crinkle version, blue gingham version, green striped version, lavender daisy version, pink polka-dot version, and cream rosebud version could all look surprisingly different even though they were made from the same sewing pattern.
What This Can Be Worn With
One of my favourite things about a simple gathered blouse is how easily it can fit into an everyday wardrobe.
Pair it with high-waisted jeans for an easy casual outfit, especially if you make the blouse slightly cropped. Straight-leg, tapered, or wide-leg jeans could all work depending on the look you prefer.
For something softer and more feminine, wear it with a flowing midi or maxi skirt. A floral skirt paired with a solid-coloured blouse would be especially pretty.
You could also wear your blouse with:
- High-waisted shorts
- Denim skirts
- A-line skirts
- Linen trousers
- Wide-leg trousers
- Capri pants
- High-waisted tapered pants
- Simple maxi skirts
- Casual summer skirts
For a cottage-inspired outfit, try the blouse with a long skirt, woven bag, sandals, and a few delicate accessories.
You could also make a slightly dressier version in a special textured or embroidered fabric and pair it with tailored trousers, a skirt, pretty shoes, and jewellery.
