There is something so pretty and timeless about a simple gingham blouse, especially when you add a gathered neckline and a little bit of lace! This Gingham Peasant Blouse is one of those sewing projects that looks sweet and romantic without requiring an overly complicated design.
The blouse has a loose, comfortable shape with an elasticated off-shoulder neckline, softly gathered fabric and short sleeves finished with delicate lace trim. I made mine in classic blue and white gingham, which gives it a lovely cottage-inspired feel and makes it easy to pair with pieces already in your wardrobe.

Fabric Texture Suggestions
A lightweight or medium-light woven fabric works beautifully for this blouse because you want enough softness for all of those pretty gathers around the neckline.
Cotton is an easy choice, particularly if you are a beginner. It is generally easy to cut, pin and sew, while still giving the blouse enough structure to show off its shape.
You could also try cotton lawn or cotton poplin for a lightweight blouse with a crisp, fresh finish. If you want something even softer and more romantic, consider a lightweight linen blend or another breathable woven fabric with a gentle drape.
For a particularly feminine version, you could experiment with embroidered cotton, eyelet fabric or subtle textured fabric. The simple shape of the blouse leaves plenty of room for a beautiful fabric to become the main feature.
Fabric Pattern/Colour Suggestions
Of course, gingham is one of my favourite choices for this blouse!
My version uses blue and white gingham, but this design would be adorable in so many other gingham colours. Try baby pink, blush pink, sage green, lavender, yellow, red or even a classic black-and-white check.
Small floral prints would also suit this blouse beautifully. Think tiny roses, scattered wildflowers, ditsy florals and vintage-inspired flower prints.
For something playful, you could try:
- Tiny polka dots
- Delicate stripes
- Miniature bows
- Rosebud prints
- Small daisies
- Pastel checks
- Embroidered flowers
- Soft solid colours
You can also change the entire personality of the blouse through your fabric choice. A blue gingham version feels fresh and cottage-inspired, while blush pink with cream lace would make it especially romantic. White eyelet could create a beautiful summery version, while a tiny floral print would give it a sweet vintage feel.
Don’t forget about the trim! White or cream lace is an easy choice, but you could coordinate the lace with your fabric or use embroidered trim, scalloped edging or another pretty decorative finish.
What This Can Be Worn With
The relaxed peasant shape makes this blouse very easy to style.
I especially like the idea of wearing it with high-waisted jeans or trousers. Because the blouse has plenty of volume and gathers, a more fitted or structured bottom can create a lovely balance.
For a soft cottage-inspired outfit, pair it with a flowing midi skirt, A-line skirt or long gathered skirt. Denim skirts and shorts would also work beautifully for a more casual look.
