I love sewing blouses that have a simple construction but still look a little special when they are finished, and this Sparkly Ruched Babydoll Blouse is definitely one of those projects. It has a romantic off-the-shoulder neckline, pretty puff sleeves, gathering beneath the bust and a small ruched detail at the centre front that gives the blouse its distinctive shape.
I made mine using a beautiful pink sparkly fabric, which gives the blouse a fun, feminine party look without taking away from the softness of the babydoll silhouette. The loose lower section also gives the blouse plenty of movement and makes it an easy style to dress up or down.

Fabric Texture Suggestions
The fabric you choose can completely change the personality of this blouse. I used a lightweight sparkly fabric because I wanted my version to have lots of shimmer while still being soft enough to gather and drape nicely.
For a similar look, try sparkly knit, glitter mesh, metallic knit, shimmer fabric or lightweight lurex fabric. A fabric with a little stretch can also make the blouse comfortable to wear, particularly around the neckline and bust.
If you would prefer a softer romantic version, try lightweight cotton, cotton lawn, voile, chiffon, georgette or a soft crepe. These fabrics would create a floatier babydoll section and pretty puff sleeves.
For something with even more texture, I think this pattern could look beautiful in embroidered mesh, Swiss dot, eyelet, lace or a delicate floral fabric with raised details. If you use a sheer fabric, you may want to line the bodice or wear a simple camisole underneath.
Try to avoid fabrics that are extremely stiff or bulky. The gathers and centre-front ruching are an important part of this design, so a fabric that can gather easily will usually give you the prettiest result.
Fabric Pattern/Colour Suggestions
There are so many pretty directions you could take this blouse.
For a sparkly version similar to mine, try blush pink, rose pink, champagne, lavender, powder blue, mint green, sage green or soft gold. These colours would all work beautifully with a shimmer or glitter finish.
If you love a more romantic look, small-scale florals would be gorgeous. Think tiny rosebuds, scattered wildflowers, miniature daisies or delicate vintage-inspired flowers.
Gingham would give the blouse a completely different personality and would be especially pretty in pink and white, blue and white, lavender and white or sage and white. Polka dots, tiny hearts and subtle stripes could also work well.
You could even make the upper and lower sections from coordinating fabrics. A floral bodice paired with a coordinating solid bottom, for example, could make the seam beneath the bust an intentional design feature.
For evening or party versions, try richer shades such as hot pink, emerald green, royal blue, deep plum, black or rose gold in a fabric with lots of sparkle.
What This Can Be Worn With
Because the lower portion of the blouse has a loose babydoll shape, I especially like the idea of pairing it with more fitted or streamlined bottoms.
Wear it with high-waisted jeans or tapered denim pants for a pretty but casual outfit. A pair of fitted black trousers can instantly make a sparkly version feel dressier.
For something softer and more romantic, pair it with a high-waisted skirt. A simple A-line, straight or softly flowing skirt would allow the ruched neckline and puff sleeves to remain the focus.
You could also wear it with shorts for a cute warm-weather outfit. High-waisted denim shorts, tailored shorts or softly structured linen shorts would all work.
And, of course, a sparkly version is perfect when you want a blouse for a party, dinner date, celebration or fun evening out. Add a pretty pair of shoes and a simple bag, and the shimmer in the blouse can do most of the dressing up for you.
