There is something so pretty and timeless about a little gingham blouse, especially when you add puff sleeves and rows of shirring! This Shirred Gingham Peasant Blouse Sewing Pattern is a simple, feminine project with a relaxed shape, gathered neckline, puff sleeves, and beautiful rows of shirring across the upper bodice.
I love how the shirring transforms simple pieces of fabric into something that looks much more detailed. The finished blouse has that sweet cottage seamstress feel that I love, while still being easy to style with everyday pieces already in your wardrobe.

Fabric Texture Suggestions
Lightweight and medium-light woven fabrics are lovely choices for this blouse because you want enough softness for the fabric to gather beautifully when it is shirred.
A few fabrics I would try are:
- Lightweight cotton
- Cotton lawn
- Cotton poplin
- Gingham cotton
- Seersucker
- Chambray
- Linen or a lightweight linen blend
- Double gauze
- Soft embroidered cotton
- Lightweight eyelet fabric
For a more romantic version, I would love to try this blouse in a delicate embroidered cotton or a lightweight fabric scattered with tiny embroidered flowers.
The puff sleeves also give you an opportunity to play with texture. You could make the main blouse from cotton and use embroidered fabric, eyelet, or another lightweight decorative fabric for the sleeves.
Whatever you choose, I recommend testing your shirring on a scrap of the fabric first. Different fabrics can gather differently with elastic thread, so a little test will help you see how your finished blouse is likely to behave.
Fabric Pattern/Colour Suggestions
Gingham is naturally one of my favourite choices for this blouse. The combination of the checks, shirring, and puff sleeves gives the finished top such a sweet handmade look.
You don’t have to stick with traditional gingham colours either. Imagine this blouse in:
- Blush pink gingham
- Powder blue gingham
- Sage or soft green gingham
- Lavender gingham
- Hot pink gingham
- Yellow or golden gingham
- Black and white gingham
- Tiny rosebud prints
- Ditsy wildflowers
- Daisies
- Polka dots
- Delicate stripes
- Tiny bow prints
You could even make several versions of the same blouse in completely different fabrics. A pastel floral version could feel soft and romantic, while black-and-white gingham could give the exact same pattern a slightly more classic look.
For something especially whimsical, try a tiny rosebud or wildflower print with contrasting puff sleeves.
What This Can Be Worn With
This is the kind of blouse that can become a really fun statement piece without being difficult to wear.
For an easy everyday outfit, pair it with high-waisted jeans or tapered denim trousers. The loose, gathered shape of the blouse works beautifully against a more fitted or structured bottom.
You could also wear it with:
- High-waisted shorts
- A denim skirt
- A flowing midi skirt
- A tiered cotton skirt
- Linen trousers
- Cropped trousers
- Wide-leg pants

For a cottagecore-inspired outfit, I would pair it with a flowing skirt, simple sandals, a woven bag, and delicate accessories.
You can also have fun changing the personality of the blouse through your fabric choice. A bright pink gingham version could be playful and cheerful, while a tiny floral version paired with a long skirt would feel much more romantic and vintage-inspired.
And because the neckline is gathered and designed to sit beautifully across the upper body, it makes a lovely warm-weather blouse for picnics, casual outings, craft days, brunches, and other relaxed occasions.
