If you love pretty handmade blouses with a romantic cottage-inspired feel, I think you’ll enjoy making this Cottagecore Peplum Square Neck Blouse. This is such a sweet little blouse design, with a simple square neckline, softly gathered waist, short sleeves and a flared peplum-style bottom.
One of my favourite things about this blouse is how much you can change its personality simply by changing the fabric. You could make it soft and floral, bright and playful, classic and gingham, or even use contrasting fabric for the sleeves. It is also a lovely pattern for experimenting with some of those pretty fabrics you may have been saving in your sewing collection.

Fabric Texture Suggestions
There are so many beautiful fabric textures you could try with this blouse. Because the design has gathering around the waist and sleeves, I especially like the idea of choosing a fabric that has enough softness to gather nicely without being overly stiff.
Cotton is a lovely everyday choice and is especially nice if you are still getting comfortable with sewing garments. Lightweight cotton, cotton lawn and similar woven fabrics can give the blouse a crisp but still feminine appearance.
Linen and linen blends would create a slightly more relaxed version. I think this would be particularly pretty for a simple warm-weather blouse worn with jeans, shorts or a flowing skirt.
You could also experiment with fabrics such as:
- Lightweight denim or chambray
- Cotton poplin
- Seersucker
- Broderie anglaise or eyelet
- Embroidered cotton
- Lightweight satin
- Soft floral fabrics
- Lightweight textured woven fabrics
Another fun option is to use two different fabric textures. For example, you could make the main blouse from cotton and use satin, embroidered fabric, eyelet or another contrasting material for the sleeves. This is a wonderful way to use smaller pieces of special fabric left over from another sewing project.
Fabric Pattern/Colour Suggestions
This blouse is perfect for playing with colour and pattern.
For a very traditional cottage-inspired look, try tiny florals, scattered roses, ditsy flowers or soft botanical prints. Shades such as blush pink, sage green, butter yellow, powder blue, lavender and cream would all work beautifully.
Gingham would be another lovely choice. Pink and white, blue and white, green and white or even a warm yellow gingham could completely transform the blouse.

- Tiny rosebuds
- Daisies
- Polka dots
- Narrow stripes
- Little bows
- Small checks
- Wildflower prints
- Vintage-inspired florals
- Patchwork-style prints
You certainly don’t have to stick with pastels either. Jewel tones such as emerald green, deep rose, burgundy or navy could make the same pattern feel richer and more dramatic.
I also love the idea of contrasting sleeves. You could pair a solid-coloured bodice with floral sleeves, gingham with coordinating satin sleeves, or two different shades of the same colour. Small changes like these can make every blouse you sew from the pattern feel like a completely new design.
What This Can Be Worn With
The peplum shape makes this blouse especially cute with more fitted or structured bottoms because the gathered waist and flared lower portion already create quite a bit of shape.
Try wearing your finished blouse with high-waisted jeans or tapered denim trousers for an easy everyday outfit. The blouse adds a pretty handmade detail while the denim keeps everything casual.
It would also look lovely with high-waisted shorts, especially for a warm-weather outfit.
For something more romantic, pair it with a midi or maxi skirt. A simple solid-coloured skirt could balance a floral or patterned blouse beautifully.
You could even dress the blouse up with tailored trousers, a flowing skirt and pretty shoes for dinners, picnics, afternoon outings or other occasions where you want something that feels a little special without being overly formal.
And because you are sewing it yourself, you can make versions specifically for different parts of your wardrobe—a casual cotton version, a floral version, a dressier satin version and perhaps a playful gingham one.
