There is something so pretty and feminine about an off-shoulder blouse, especially when it has a soft gathered neckline and a little ruffle along the top. Today, I am sharing my Off-Shoulder Ruffle Blouse Sewing Pattern, along with the free PDF pattern and sewing tutorial so that you can make one too.
I made my blouse in a beautiful bright pink fabric, and I love how the simple shape allows the fabric to really stand out. The elasticated neckline creates those lovely gathers while also forming the little ruffle around the shoulders. The sleeves are loose and floaty, and the body of the blouse has a relaxed shape that makes it comfortable and easy to wear.
Another thing I really like about this blouse is how much you can change its overall look simply by choosing a different fabric. You could make a soft romantic version, a cheerful cottage-inspired version, a casual everyday blouse, or even a sparkly party version using the exact same pattern.
Fabric Texture Suggestions
There are so many different fabrics you could experiment with for this blouse.
I especially like fabrics that have enough softness to gather nicely around the elasticated neckline. Lightweight and flowy fabrics are commonly recommended for off-shoulder ruffle tops because they allow the gathers and sleeves to fall softly rather than looking overly stiff.
Some fabrics I think would look beautiful include:
- Satin
- Crepe satin
- Lightweight cotton
- Cotton lawn
- Cotton gauze
- Voile
- Linen or lightweight linen blends
- Rayon or viscose
- Chiffon
- Georgette
- Broderie anglaise
- Embroidered cotton
- Eyelet fabric
- Lightweight jacquard
I also think this would be a wonderful pattern for experimenting with more decorative fabrics. Imagine the blouse in a fabric covered with tiny embroidered flowers, delicate eyelet details or even subtle metallic threads.
A smooth satin gives the blouse a completely different personality. The gathers catch the light beautifully and make an otherwise simple blouse feel much dressier.
Fabric Pattern/Colour Suggestions
This is definitely one of those patterns I could see myself making again and again just to experiment with different colours and prints.
For a sweet cottage-inspired blouse, try:
- Gingham
- Tiny floral prints
- Daisies
- Rosebuds
- Polka dots
- Little bows
- Delicate stripes
For something bolder, you could try larger florals, colourful stripes or a really bright solid colour.
I would also love this blouse in blush pink, baby blue, lavender, sage green, butter yellow, cream, white, hot pink, red or even a beautiful gold or champagne fabric.
You could make several versions and they would barely look like the same blouse.
When working with a directional print, gingham, plaid or stripes, take a little extra time when cutting your pieces so the design sits nicely on the finished garment. Matching prominent stripes or checks at seams can also give the finished blouse a neater appearance.
What This Can Be Worn With
One of my favourite things about this blouse is how easy it is to style.
For a casual outfit, I would wear it with a pair of high-waisted jeans or tapered denim pants. The loose, gathered shape of the blouse works beautifully with a more fitted or structured bottom.
It would also look lovely with:
- High-waisted trousers
- Capri pants
- A-line skirts
- Circle skirts
- Pencil skirts
- Denim skirts
- High-waisted shorts
- Wide-leg trousers
- Gaucho pants
You could wear a gingham or floral version with a flowing skirt and sandals for a soft cottage-inspired outfit. A bright satin version could be paired with fitted trousers, a pencil skirt or a beautiful full skirt for something dressier.
Shoes can change the look too. Try ballet flats or sandals for something relaxed and feminine, heels for a dressier outfit, or even sneakers for a more casual version.
And because the neckline is the main feature of this blouse, I think it looks especially pretty with simple jewellery that doesn’t compete with the ruffle.
